Early in 2013, life was going great. My children were in 4th grade, 1st grade, morning preschool, and 18 months at home with me. I was happily running my child development home with a mix of full time and part time children from ages 6 weeks to 4 years in my care and volunteering with the local community theaters – on the board of directors, teaching drama classes for children, and venturing on stage to sing and act when our family schedules permitted. My husband had a great full time job at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City and was about to begin his online graduate program in Strategic Communications Management through USC. As a mom and woman constantly surrounded by children, I was finding my community through Facebook groups, especially co-ops, groups where the administrators host buys for quality products at wholesale pricing for the group members. In one group, a woman shared about Jamberry Nails. I realized that I had not done my nails since college and before children, also that I had never done my nails with my daughters – isn’t that what moms are supposed to do? These Jamberry Nails sounded a little too good to be true – pieces of a vinyl-type material that adhere to finger and toe nails with heat (from a hair dryer or the company’s mini heater) and pressure (press with your thumb, a wine cork, or the rubber-tipped cuticle pusher the company’s application kit includes) and they last up to two weeks on fingers, six weeks on toes with NO dry time, and they never chip. They had some for adults and for children, and I was really intrigued by the idea of “do it and forget it,” just enjoy the nail art on your nails.

There were so many fun designs to choose from! I think I got two for me and two for my girls. I also got the application kit – I can never seem to find my nail clippers anyway, and these nail tools came with a cute bag to store them. I received everything about three weeks later and watched the application video on the website to find out how to apply them. I used my hair dryer for all of us. It was SO loud, my cat would run wildly around the living room, hissing, and we couldn’t really talk to each other while we did our nails. Also, it was a bit cumbersome to navigate the hair dryer with the nail tools and wraps. But, the three of us got our nail wraps on and liked how they looked. We finally had fun nails and did quality mother daughter bonding!

Skip ahead a few months. Our family went through three major financial situations, and I was finding myself considering adding a part time job to help decrease our financial burden. I had waited tables all through college, but now with four children at home, plus my husband doing online coursework at night, I again realized that any work outside of our home would just pay for child care. I received a note in the mail from the Jamberry Nails lady with the company brochure about hosting and the business opportunity. Once more, I was intrigued. I had been wearing the wraps, and just the week before, four people at the grocery store had complimented me on my manicure. I thought, “I need a business card! I bet I could sell these!” Of course, I had sworn off direct sales. I’d had a negative experience years before when I tried another company, but I thought this might be the way to help us solve our money issues. I contacted her, asked many, many questions, liked many of the things I learned about the company, and decided to give it a try. At the very least, I was confident I could cover the cost of my own use. I joined in September 2013. I received the mini heater in my consultant kit, and cannot believe I never invested in that before then. It cut my application time and energy in half AND I can do my nails whenever because it is whisper quiet. TV time and a new manicure is my new Sunday evening self-care routine.

Much of my start was done online through Facebook parties. They were so easy! I just shared pictures and information that other Jamberry consultants had put together as scripts, and the hosts and their friends would interact and purchase on my website. I had solved our family dilemma of working without paying for child care. Many nights, after our children were in bed, my husband and I would look lovingly at one another over our lap tops as he did school work and I ran Jamberry Nails parties. It was going so well, that by May 2014, I was one of the first 600 Team Managers in the company of about 7,000 consultants. Now I am the one leading a team of 133 and growing in the company that is approaching 100,000 strong and helping new consultants with online party scripts, figuring out their strengths in this business, and how to obtain their personal and family financial and time freedoms.
Jamberry Nails has provided more income for our family than I had ever thought could be possible from these tiny vinyl wraps for my fingers and toes. We have been able to pay off quite a bit of the debt we had incurred in 2013 and give our family some of the things they had mentioned but had never done. I was also one of 114 who earned the 2015 incentive trip for one week in Cancun at an all-inclusive resort. My husband and I are going on our first ever vacation together in less than two weeks – all paid for by Jamberry Nails! The personal development I have experienced as I learned more about direct sales and network marketing, creating a vision for my business and life and helping to lead other women toward their own dreams and our team goals, and continuing to enjoy mother-daughter time with our fun nail art have been the things I have greatly enjoyed.

I still offer Facebook parties. Now that my husband is finished with his grad program, I have more time available to offer in person parties as well – ladies’ nights, birthday parties, bridal parties, and really fun theme parties, such as Mani’s and Margaritas, Coffee and Jam, Pajama Jam, just to name a few. I am also looking for more organizations and people to work with for fundraisers this year. If you have a cause that is near and dear to your heart, let’s talk about how Jamberry Nails can help you raise those needed funds.

I have discovered that getting together with a few friends to connect and spend some time chatting and doing our nails is really important. My goal is to provide an outlet for women in our area to realize that aspect of their lives.

Iowa Essential Oils | Marcie Spight Tobin

This week I had the opportunity to interview Marcie Spight Tobin of Iowa Essential Oils, an independent distributor with Young Living Oils.
Marcie started her journey when she began using Young Living Essential Oils one year ago when her best friend introduced them to her. She was dealing with a personal matter and the emotional stress was making sleep extremely difficult. Her friend gave her a bottle of lavender essential oil and as Marcie stated, “the rest is history”.

After Marcie had been using the oils in her home for a few months for everything from supporting a healthy immune system to cleaning she decided to dive into the business side of things. It was her true passion for the oils and their effectiveness that made her focus on sharing and educating about each oil’s uses and effectiveness and that’s when she began Iowa Essential Oils.

A Colorado native, Marcie has been living in Iowa for the past 4 years. Although she’s still trying to get used to the weather she stated she “loves raising her kids in Iowa”. She and her husband have been married for almost 10 years and they share 3 boys, ages 15, 5 and 3. Between her business and being an active mother to 3 very active boys she doesn’t get much free time, but then again, what mom does!? When she does have the rare spare moment she loves to read and garden. She also loves to cook, learning and craves knowledge.

Marcie will be hosting an Essential Oils 101 Facebook class on February 22nd at 7pm and everyone is invited to attend from the comfort of their own home. Amy Mangan | Owl Be Green

This weeks work-at-home-mom is Owl Be Green’s owner Amy Mangan! Owl Be Green is a cloth diaper shop that also sells reusable cloth nursing pads, cloth wipes, and cloth infant shoes. Amy started making cloth diapers so she could make amazingly cute diapers for her youngest son. Soon after she started selling to a few friends and in local cloth diapering groups, as more interest grew Amy opened her Etsy Shop and started her Facebook Page.

While at first making diapers was just a hobby for a little extra spending cash, after moving to Coralville this summer and having a difficult time finding a new teaching job locally she decided to really make a go of her WAHM business. Amy officially started up shop in April of 2014 and really committed to making her WAHM dream a reality in August of the same year. She makes mostly all-in-two diaper covers with snap-in absorbent inserts. While she also makes reusable cloth nursing pads, cloth wipes and cloth infant shoes, her love is making the cloth diapers and looking for fun and new fabrics to use. All of Amy’s products are compliant with CPSIA regulations and she is also registered as a Small Batch Manufacturer with the CPSA.

Even with a master’s degree in early childhood education Amy couldn’t be happier with her career choice in becoming a WAHM as it now allows her to stay at home with her 2 year old son. She also has a 7 year old son who is in the 2nd grade and a wonderful supporting husband that does IT work for the University of Iowa Hospital.

While diapers and similar products are what she primarily makes when asked what other crafts she likes she responded, “I love all kinds of crafts and art activities”! She does a lot of painting and crafts with her kids and loves to catch up on shows on Netflix in her rare spare time moments.

Amy runs a referral program for returning customers where each referral earns the returning customer a $2 in store credit when a new customers mentions the name of the individual that referred them. Customers with in store credit and redeem up to 5 referral credits at a time. She often runs sales and just designed a couple of exclusive Valentine’s Day prints that she is super excited about! Custom orders and special requests are also taken for her products.
